Lower Eastside Girls Club
Center for Community Grand Opening Gala
Center for Community, NYC
The Lower Eastside Girls Club was founded in 1996 to address the historic lack of services
available to girls and young women on the Lower East Side. The 30,000 sq. ft. Lower Eastside
Girls Club Center for Community will enable the organization to reach thousands of at risk youth
through weekend, afterschool
and summer programming. The new building hosts a full STEM
program, including a 30’ dome planetarium, a commercial kitchen for job training and culinary
arts, a Center for Media and Social Justice led by Rosario Dawson, and the permanent home of
The Tyra Banks TZONE, which will be every girl’s first experience at the Girls Club and the
epicenter of learning for body image, entrepreneurialism and college preparedness.
To celebrate the grand opening of the Lower Eastside Girls Club Center for Community, a gala was held in seven different rooms of the center with hosts including Tyra Banks, Rosario Dawson, Simon Doonan, Ben Jealous among others.
